Soma was formed by Kirsten and Marissa in 2006. The aim was to integrate the ancient art of Belly Dancing into the present, fusing it with more modern, contemporary elements while keeping the essence of the dance. The result is a dynamic, innovative style, with beautiful costuming, mesmerising moves and an ensemble of amazing musicians and professional performers to keep you entertained.

Marissa Cuenoud

Marissa has a background in dance, doing 10 years of ballet and modern dance before turning her focus on Belly Dancing in 2000. She has learned from many talented teachers around Cape Town and tribal teachers visiting from abroad. Over the years she has also dabbled in Indian and Spanish dance and continues an ongoing yoga practice. She has been performing for the past 8 years and after forming Soma in 2006, started teaching aswell, she is now teaching Tribal Fusion workshops around South Africa. Some of the teachers she has attended workshops with include: Tamlyn Dallal, Sharon Kihara, Moria Cambell(BDSS), Kami Liddle (BDSS), Petite Jamilla (BDSS), Sonja (BDSS), Maureen (ATS UK), Philippa (Moirai UK), Noelle (East Coast Tribal), Kimberley Mackoy

Kashiefa Petersen
Kashiefa has always had a passion for dancing, though not until starting bellydance classes in 2006 was in fully realised. She started with Cabaret, before finding her niche with Tribal Fusion and Soma. She quickly worked her way through the syllabus and attended every workshop on offer. She started performing at the beginning of 2007 and soon after began teaching under Soma aswell. Her talent, creativity and enthusiasm makes her a valuable asset to the Soma team.
Vlada Meyer

Vlada has been dancing salsa and Flamenco for 5 years when in 2005 she discovered ATS and Tribal Fusion. Dancing this powerful and fluid style helped her to quickly recover after a hard operation. In early 2008 she joined Soma Tribal Fusion Company and started her professional training as a dance instructor. Vlada loves teaching to cultivate strength and beauty through movement and to realize that it is a deep connection to our body that is the source of our brilliance, wisdom, creativity and happiness. Vlada has a background in Creative Theatre and has successfully conducted teambuilding workshops and creativity trainings with various corporate and middium-size businesses as well as NGOs and schools around Cape Town for almost 4 years.

Ghoezayma Byrow
Ghoezayma discovered  bellydance in 2004. She started with Cabaret style dance with various teachers completing two of BDASA's grade certifications.  She finally found her passion late 2007, Tribal Fusion. Immediately signing up with Soma her journey into the tribal world began and she has never looked back.  She started training as a professional teacher mid 2008, aspiring to share this beautiful art form with all who wish to learn. Ghoezayma also has a certificate in Make-up artistry.
Elisha Kraemer

Elisha Kraemer has been Belly Dancing since 2004. She has since been taught by local Hip Circle, Feminine Divine, Ajsa Samia and Kirsten Metcalf of the formerly known Sickle Moon. In 2006, she travelled abroad to be immersed in the world of Tribal Style Belly Dance. She has attended classes and workshops with internationally renowned teachers including Rachel Brice, Moria of ‘The Indigo’, Sharon Kihara, Morgana of the ‘Mists of Avalon’ and Lila Zellet Elias of ‘Egiptanos’.
She is currently studying and performing with her teacher Marissa Cuenoud of Soma. She strives to push the boundaries of traditional Belly Dance and is a talented, creative and disciplined dancer.
